Jan Campbell

About me

I am an experienced psychoanalytic therapist with a background of 25 years + of clinical practice. I have worked in the NHS and currently work in private practice. I have experience of working with clients affected by many different issues and adopt a pluralistic approach drawing on my years of experience working in different settings. I work with a wide range of people and emotional issues such as bereavement, relationship issues, depression, eating disorders, phobias, anxiety and anger management. My approach is boundaried, supportive and creative and although as a psychoanalyst  I work with past patterns and events, and with your values and beliefs these are just a key to being able to move beyond the past towards a future. Change and the future are daunting and unknowable things, and the therapy I offer is to facilitate this movement towards the future, whilst being  empathic to my client’s needs to feel safe and supported.

Because starting therapy can often feel really hard, I recommend we have a telephone conversation before arranging an initial consultation. Should we decide to work together, I generally expect a minimum of 10 weekly sessions after which we can review whether we continue to work together long term or not.

There is no immediate solution to psychological pain and coming to therapy requires commitment on the part of the client, but therapy is often a really pleasurable experience as well as being painful and therapy is as much about the creative discovery of who we are as it is about the acceptance of ourselves and others. Significant change does not happen overnight and is different for each person, but through regular therapy changes are made in many different ways. Relationality is at the heart of what I do and although therapy be difficult at times it can also be interesting and pleasurable to do the work together.

I have worked as an analytical psychotherapist in Brighton and Lewes for the last 25 years, at the Rock Clinic in Brighton, at The University of Sussex Counselling service and in private practice in Lewes and Brighton/Hove.. Between 2009 and 2010 I was the Chair of Psychotherapy Sussex. I currently work in private practice at the junction of Brighton and Hove.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a background in psychoanalysis and analytic therapy with 15 years experience of working within the N.H.S, a University Counselling Department, the Rock Therapy Clinic in Brighton and private practise.

I have also held various academic posts where I have taught and carried out research in relation to psychoanalysis. I have supervised doctoral work in psychoanalysis for many years in relation to both theoretically and clinically orientated research projects.
